PhiladelphiaEater: Heffe, Fishtown’s Newest Taco Shop is Open

Earlier this week, Foobooz broke news that chef Peter McAndrews (Modo Mio, Paesano’s, Monsu) opened his first Fishtown/not-Italian venture, Heffe, this week. On the cleverly-named menu, lamb belly burritos, octopus tacos, and hangover soup (or menudo soup: pig knuckle, feet, stomach, hominy, etc.) among McAndrews interpretations of more traditional items: Tacos Al[most] Pastor, and Lengua, (calf’s tongue tacos with a raisin puree).

The shop is open daily for lunch and dinner, but more importantly, and especially so with The Yachtsman across the street, it’s open until 3:00 a.m. on weekends.

PhillyVoice: Fishtown taco joint Heffe open for business

Northern Liberties has its fair share of Mexican restaurants for locals and visitors to get their fill of tacos, but options in neighboring Fishtown have been a little more sparse.

True to the spirit of the neighborhood, Heffe Tacos has opened for business with one very simple promise: “Tacos that don’t suck.”

According to Foobooz, the walk-up restaurant at 1431 Frankford Avenue is the brainchild of Peter McAndrews, who’s won plenty of accolades and loyalty for Paesano’s, Modo Mio and Monsu.

Known for his creative sandwich combos, McAndrews will offer an alternative to typical taco variations at Heffe, branching out to encompass other Latin-inspired and Mediterranean entries.

The Mac Daddy includes beef cheek, plumb mostarda, red chimichurri and queso fresco, while the Betty Won’t packs chickpeas, roast tomatoes, almonds, chimichurri, and sweet pea guacamole.

Open daily for lunch and dinner, Heffe Tacos will remain open until 3 a.m. on weekends. A pair tacos will range from $6-9 and if you’re in the mood for something else, the menu also has burritos, soups, and poutine.

Philly.com: Heffe | A cheffy taco shop for Fishtown

Fishtown is getting a taco shop.

Thursday, Oct. 8 is the projected opening date for Heffe, a corner stand run by chef Peter McAndrews and business partner Anthony Lolio in what was a longtime grocery store and takeout in a small lot at Frankford Avenue and Marlborough Street.

McAndrews never goes the simple route, as evidenced by the delicious and thoroughly cheffy sandwiches at his Paesano’s shops.

At Heffe – which is spelled with an “h” to avoid any pronunciation ambiguities – he plans a “plain Jane” taco with shredded beef, lettuce, tomato, and Jack cheese on a crispy shell, as well as tacos al pastor.

But he also has the following tacos on the drawing board:

cumin-seared sweetbreads with bacon, boquerones, plum mostarda, and almond-cilantro gremolata
chicken thigh, crispy cracklings, and chipotle salsa
a Tijuana Tommy, which is a Mexican corn dog with chorizo, slaw, Jack, jalapeno, and onion
queso fundido with chorizo, mushrooms, and sweet peas
Hours will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. (perhaps later) Friday and Saturday.

Sample some at the Fishtown Night Market on Oct. 1.

Philadelphia Magazine: Taco Time | Heffe Reviewed

They were taking the Christmas lights down at Heffe on the day I showed up. Everyone was wearing gloves and hats; collars turned up against some of the first serious cold of the year. It was the kind of afternoon that made the smooth white stones of the outdoor seating area, the picnic tables, the sand-colored stucco of the walls and all the lime, the chilies, the summer-sunlight flavors kind of a joke. Who eats street tacos in January? In Philly?

No one but me … and the half dozen people already waiting ahead of me, and the additional half dozen who filed in behind. Enough people that maybe it isn’t really a joke anymore, but a question—semi-serious and a little bit darker: How desperate for tacos do you have to be to risk frostbite in Fishtown just to get your fix?

Heffe has no indoor seating, just those red picnic tables. There’s no dining room, no service, no silver, no booze. No credit cards are accepted (it’s cash on the barrelhead, but relatively cheap), though if you count the two column heaters and those Christmas lights (now gone), an ATM makes up fully one quarter of the exterior decor.

Zagat: 5 Things to Know About Heffe Tacos

August 18th, 2016 Posted by PRESS 0 thoughts on “Zagat: 5 Things to Know About Heffe Tacos”

Those who know Peter McAndrews, the chef behind beloved sandwich spots Paesano’s Philly Style and Modo Mio, know that subtlety isn’t really his thing. So when he opened up a Fishtown taco window earlier this month, the motto, “tacos that don’t suck” wasn’t a big shocker. From pork roll burritos to Mexican-American-Canadian poutine, here’s what you need to know about Heffe Tacos.

1. Window Service

Fishtown real estate is some of the priciest in the city. McAndrews and his partners found a great workaround by taking over a former gas station at the corner of Frankford and Marlborough and repurposing it into a walk-up taco stand complete with outdoor red picnic table seating. Don’t worry about catching a chill in the colder months; there are plenty of standing heaters ready for alfresco tacos and burritos all winter long.

2. Atypical Tacos

Puebla-style tacos have become the norm here in Philly but at Heffe, McAndrews is taking plenty of creative license with his tortilla and protein combos. In lieu of carnitas and tinga McAndrews has crafted a lineup of tacos with creative filings like the Kraken, fried octopus with spicy tomato jam and Mexican mozzarella, and a take on tongue tacos with ancho-raisin purée, cabbage and lime.

3. Big Burritos

With a penchant for over-the-top sandwiches, McAndrews’ rundown of burritos is serious. The Americano is a Philly-style breakfast burrito with pork roll, an over-easy egg, rice, beans and jack cheese. And while the menu is plenty meaty, look for a few veg-friendly items like the Betty Won’t, a quinoa burrito with sweet pea guac, roasted tomatoes and an almond chimichurri.

4. Side Action

Chips might be the go-to side for tacos and burritos but at Heffe the side game goes much deeper. A hangover-slaying bowl of menudo is on the menu here (“Hangover soup, if you need it, get it” reads the menu description) as well as a chicken corn chowder and a take on chili cheese fries dubbed Mexican Poutine.

5. Last Call

Fishtown streets are packed on weekends after the bars close their doors; Heffe is fully prepared for the crowds with 3 AM closing times on Friday and Saturday nights. We’re pretty sure that the Fat Man, a crispy chicken burrito with bacon, rice and beans and American cheese, will not only have you sleeping soundly but feeling a little more human upon waking up the morning after.

MadlyMegan: FISHTOWN’S NEWEST CATCH: HEFFE TACOS.

Philadelphia is known for its eclectic and diverse food scene. From the Italian Market to Chinatown, your desires are at your fingertips.

This past Sunday I had the privilege of sampling the menu at Heffe tacos, a new taqueria in Fishtown. Heffe tacos opened October 8th, and is located at the corner of Frankford Avenue and Marlborough Street. Heffe, owned by Anthony Lolio, combines traditional Mexican cuisine with a new creative flare.

I visited Heffe during a Philadelphia blogger-meet-up, where chef Peter McAndrews served us an array of delicious Mexican delights.

First, we started off with the “menudo,” which is a stew filled with vegetables, pulled pork, and topped with sour cream. “Menudo” is a supposed hangover cure, so by Sunday at noon I was eager to try, and happy to report it worked.

Second, we tried my favorite dish, a little piece of heaven, the “Tijuana Poutine.” The “Tijuana Poutine” is waffle fries covered with queso, cilantro, onion, jalapenos, and Mexican chili, served with an egg over easy. The crisp crunch of the fries combined with the cheese and chili was amazing.

Next, Chef Peter served quesadillas, stuffed with cheese, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato and onions. We also sampled an octopus filled taco as well as a traditional beef taco.

I highly recommend making a visit to Heffe in the near future. As of now there is only outside seating (long red benches you cannot miss) out front, so be sure to prepare for the cold, and have a “Tijuana Poutine,” for me.
